US oil executives: America's great fuel crisis is already here — with zero relief in sight. Protect your wallet now

Some of the biggest names in U.S. oil are now saying the fuel crisis many feared is no longer coming, because it has arrived. Chevron's CEO says he sees little reason to expect it to ease, and the cost is already moving from the pump to the grocery shelf. There are a few ways to protect your budget while prices hold.

Why it matters: Energy costs have climbed 46% since the start of 2020, far faster than the nearly 30% rise in overall prices, and households that heat with oil are projected to pay 31.3% more this winter. For anyone living on a fixed income, that is a squeeze with no easy offset.

NEWS

A beach town with low taxes and cheap healthcare sounds like the finish line, and roughly 700,000 retirees already collect their Social Security checks from outside the country. But the three programs most retirees count on do not all follow you across the border, and one of them behaves very differently from the others.

Why it matters: Medicare usually will not cover the care you get abroad, so a retirement that looks cheaper on paper can need its own health coverage. Knowing which benefits actually make the trip, before you book the one-way ticket, is what keeps the savings real.

MUST READ

Roth and Traditional IRAs look nearly identical on paper, with the same contribution limit and the same tax-advantaged label. The real difference comes down to a guess about your future tax rate, and the income limits and tax-break rules for 2026 decide how much of the choice is actually yours.

Why it matters: In a 2024 survey, 37% of retirees said they did not understand how their savings would be taxed before they retired. Traditional IRAs also force withdrawals starting at 73, while Roth IRAs require none during the owner's lifetime.
